About Maya Watanabe

A visual artist, she works with video, video installation, and performance. Her work explores silence and fragmentation as forms of resistance to the objectifying dimension of language. Identity, rupture, causality, significance, and non-linear narratives are components explored in her work through excerpts from text, scripts and cinematic dialogue. The experience of loss of contour and meaning presents itself as a constituent element of incipient, indeterminate significances. Her works have been exhibited at the Matadero, Madrid, Spain (2014); Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France (2013); Musée du Quai Branly, Paris, France (2013); Museo de Arte Contemporánea de Lima, Peru (2013 and 2011); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain (2009); Museo de Arte Moderna, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2009); Beijing 798 Biennale, 798 Art District, Beijing, China (2009); Amsterdam Mediamatic Biennale, Netherlands (2009); and others. She has been featured in festivals like FILE, Rio de Janeiro (2012) and São Paulo (2010); and Madrid Abierto, Spain (2007).
